What package type is to be used for the attached components?

Unfortunately, through-hole components don't always adhere to standard package names / sizes like surface mount parts. Moreover, through-hole components can be placed both horizontally and vertically on the board, making standard package naming even more difficult. For that reason, it is best for you to simply enter the package information for the given part in the parts list. If you then save that data in the Part Database (by part number), then you will be able to easily re-use that data in the future.

In general, it is best to think about the data stores in Sherlock in the following order:

1) Parts List
2) Part Database
3) Package Database, Material Database, Solder Database, etc

The lower level databases provide data for commonly named packages, materials, etc. but the data may not be correct for certain variations and non-standard items. The Part Database allows you to store confirmed data for parts by part numbers standardized across the industry and/or your organization. If you need to enter or correct package data for a specific part, the Part Database allows you to re-use that data across all your boards and projects. Finally, the Parts List is the last place where you can tweak data for a specific part on a specific board.

For example, a through-hole part commonly used in your organization may normally be installed in a vertical position, but on certain board it is installed in a horizontal position. As such you can simply update the package data for that specific part in the Parts List. Alternatively, you could invent a different part number for that part to indicate it is in the horizontal position and then save the part data in the Part Database using that part number.

Sherlock tries to reduce manual entry as much as possible, but in some cases, manual data entry is required. By using the Part Database to store confirmed data values, you can reduce manual data entry over time even for non-standard parts.
